Sister Isabella & Johey

Johey’s Story

On Christmas Eve last year 14-year-old Johey Basedow was given a death sentence.

For the past 11 months the Year 8 St Peter’s student has been in the fight of his life, combating a rare and aggressive cancer that no one else in Australia is believed to have.

But the Pelaw Main teenager is determined to celebrate his next Christmas with a cancer-free status and a clean bill of health after he receives specialist treatment in the United States – one of the only locations in the world to tackle Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumours (DSRCT). These are aggressive tumors that typically begin in the abdomen or pelvis and usually occur in white adolescent males.

Johey’s chemo experience

The US Surgery

The surgery that Johey needs is open, complex and extensive. It must be done by a very experienced paediatric surgeon. The 8-20 hour-long procedure involves removing the tumours on his organs, from his diaphragm to his pelvis. He may need some liver removed and he will have the lining of his abdomen (the tumour bed) removed (CRS with peritonectomy). This will be followed by bathing his abdomen in hot chemo for 90 minutes to kill any remaining microscopic cancer cells (HIPEC). Following surgery Johey will recover in the ICU for 2-3 days. After that he will have a feeding tube for about a week or until he is able to eat. If all goes well he should be discharged after 2-3 weeks.

We have reached out to Professor Hayes-Jordan, the world expert on DSRCT in children, and she has agreed to perform this procedure on Johey at her hospital in North Carolina at the end of November. The cost will be US$150, 000 (AU$225, 000) for surgery and 2 weeks care post-op, all of which goes to the hospital (UNC) and not to the Dr since she is on salary. Our wonderful oncologist at JHCH supports us going to the US to have surgery with Dr Hayes-Jordan given how well Johey has responded to treatment so far. Dr Hayes-Jordan has reviewed Johey’s scans and believes that Johey is a good candidate for CRS-HIPEC and in her emails to us says that she would be “pleased and blessed to care for him” and that there is a good chance that the procedure will prevent the cancer from returning.

Johey & dad Scott

The Australian government will not fund the surgery for Johey through MTOP because there are two paediatric surgeons in Australia that are able to perform the peritonectomy. However, they are not very experienced with DSRCT due to how rare the cancer is and HIPEC is rarely performed on children in Australia.

We are desperate and determined for Johey to have surgery with Dr Hayes-Jordan in the US.

100% profit from this event will be going to the Basedow Family to support Johey’s medical costs in the U.S.

We appreciate the support of the fantastic band and local businesses to bring CONCERT FOR A CURE to life.
